New Mommy Hair Tips that are Easy To Do!

Having a new baby, or in my case babies, doesn’t mean having to sacrifice style! Here are some tips to banish the “mom ponytail” for an effortless ‘do in no time.

Try the following:

1Straight

Sleek, straight look is something that’s always in style and can be very easily achieved by running a flat iron over your hair.

2Natural

Naturally curly or wavy hair, apply a little styling mousse and wear it natural. A little product to the rescue!

3A side braid

One of fashion’s hottest looks right now is a stylish way to wear your hair back and still look cute.

4Bun

A messy bun looks effortlessly chic and is very easy to create. It’s really only one step more than a ponytail. Just don’t make it too messy ;)

5A chignon

A chignon is another classic look that is practical yet pretty. Check out the how to videos on my blog for step-by-step instructions.

6Wear a headband

With so many cute headbands available right now, if all else fails, just put one on and go…

How often should you wash your hair?

About 90% of Americans wash their hair daily, not good… One hundred years ago, people only washed their hair once a month, and in the 1950s, it was the norm for women to have their hair washed and set once a week at the salon (which is what I do).

A clean head of hair does feel fresh and smells great but over-washing can have your hair looking and feeling like straw, not cute!

FACT: The average person’s hair grows less than half an inch per month.

Long hair that has been getting lots of shampooing, chemical treatments, blow drying, tends to get dried out and dull at the ends and can even break off.

How often you need to shampoo depends on 2 things:

  • How oily your scalp is
  • Your hair’s texture

Oil (aka sebum) - travels more easily down smooth, straight hair, making it look greasier faster. Sounds a little gross, but sebum helps moisturize and waterproof the hair shaft.

When you wash every day, you typically strip off this natural moisturizer and then have to slather it back on in the form of commercial conditioner.

Shampooing a couple of times a week is plenty. On gym days, try simply rinse with water instead of shampooing and finish with a light conditioner to detangle. Shampooing does stimulate the scalp, which brings blood flow and healthy nutrients to the hair follicles. So, if you have time a gentle scalp massage and regular brushing with a good quality hairbrush will work fabulous.

TIP: Choose a shampoo, that is formulated for your specific hair type whether it be oily, dry, limp, curly, etc. for the best results.

Now go get your shine on…
