Fashion IllustrationHere’s what you need to know about how often to wash your hair and… how to wash your hair.

Believe it or not, a lot of mistakes are made and simply washing the dust and dirt out of your hair just does not cut it ;) Go for it!

1.   First of all…

DO NOT wash your hair everyday!
DO Saturate that hair of yours with water before you add your shampoo!
This is much more important than you might think!!!

2.   Use a nice, light scented, shampoo that will lather (does not have to be expensive) and… don’t be cheap, the amount used should be according to the length of your hair. Long hair should use more than Shorter hair, obviously…
I personally wash my hair 2 times before conditioning (Once a week)… My sister on the other hand has oily hair and washes every 2-3 days, which is good too!
DO NOT over wash your hair… On the other hand wash every week, don’t be dirty girlz ;)

3.   Massage that scalp to loosen your dead skin cells and get any product out of your soon to look fabulous hair.

4.   Rinse well, extremely well. We don’t spend enough time rinsing the shampoo from our hair and need to make sure it’s all out OR you can get white stuff in your hair…which is NOT cute!

5.   Apply conditioner (each time you wash!) and distribute all the way to the ends. This is the oldest and most damaged area and needs all the help it can get! Try to leave the conditioner on your hair for at least a minute.

6.   Rinse, rinse, rinse. Be sure to check whether you are using a traditional conditioner or a leave in variety. I would suggest a GOOD conditioner (even if we want to be cheap with the shampoo, spend a little more on your conditioner)

7.   Squeeze as much water from your hair as possible, then wrap in a towel. Never rub, it causes damage.

I’ve always heard that you should not wash your hair everyday, but I wonder if doing sports is any exception? I’m sorry, but with my long hair that tends to be more oily, if I’m running everyday I will most likely be showering everyday. Should I not be washing my hair each time I shower? Just curious…

    Hi Shavonne,
When I work out, I use a shower cap after and use either baby powder or dry shampoo. You just want to absorb the sweat, your hair is not dirty. Try it out and let me know what you think.
    Best,
