Dare I, DIY Hair Color at Home?

The best accessory you can have is your…hair color. It’s true, you absolutely have to have fabulous hair color. Of, course you can try something new, go back to something you use to have, go to a salon or DIY. Ultimately you or your stylist MUST figure it out!

The question is… Should you dye your own hair OR go to the salon?

However the answer is not that simple. We went to the experts to find out. Celebrity hair pro Lorri Goddard-Clark is colorist to Scarlett Johansson and Jennifer Aniston (so yeah, she’s pretty qualified, right?). She is also the author of The Hair Color Mix Book: More Than 150 Recipes for Salon-Perfect Color At Home. I want that book :) ! Well, Lorri answers a few questions that I thought might help us all.

When is it okay to do at-home highlights and when should you go to the salon?
When you’re going for a look close to your natural color—for example, you have naturally light brown hair and want some pale honey highlights—DIY (Do-It-Yourself) kits are fine.

If you want highlights more than two or three shades lighter than your natural color you should go to the salon. (I agree!)

One highlight application tip you won’t find on the back of the box.
Add one teaspoon of olive oil to the highlight bleach of your choice. It won’t affect the performance of the product but it will give it a smoother consistency which yields even prettier highlights. And who doesn’t want a prettier highlight? (Love these little tips!)

Thanks for posting in the SHEAR GENIUS board. I really like your blog. How can I subscribe to it? (otherwise, I’ll forget to come back)

I DIY my hair color, using PUNKY COLOURS by Jerome Russell. It’s just a couple of different coloured streaks in the front, but it works marvellously because it’s got a paste-like consistency and doesn’t make a mess at home. I get compliments on it every single day (no exaggeration — any time I am out, people will come up to me and ask about it), so even though I’ve had the style for years, I’m reluctant to change it!

Why fix it if it ain’t broken :) If your hair is getting compliments after all this time, then leave it alone! If you want to do something new, get a fresh cut or style it differently…but leave that ab fab color alone!
